לאחרונה התבשרה קהילת המרפאים בעיסוק בישראל על הירצחה של כרמל גת ז"ל, בשבי חמאס בעזה. הקהילה כולה המומה וכואבת.
כרמל הייתה מרפאה בעיסוק מוערכת שעבדה בתחום בריאות הנפש, בליווי רגיש, אמפתי ומקצועי של אנשים עם קשיים נפשיים בתהליכי רכישת השכלה. מרפאות בעיסוק שעבדו איתה מתארות את גדלות הרוח שלה, את אהבת האדם ואת יכולתה לראות ולקבל כל אדם על צרכיו. עד לחטיפתה, כרמל הייתה סטודנטית לתואר שני בחוג לריפוי בעיסוק באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
כרמל נחטפה ב-7.10.23 במתקפת חמאס, מבית הוריה בקיבוץ בארי, לשם הגיעה כדי לחגוג יחד עם משפחתה את החג.
בתחילת תקופת השבי כרמל הייתה שבוייה יחד עם שני ילדים. עם שחרורם, פורסמו סיפוריהם של הילדים על כרמל, שתרגלה איתם בכל יום יוגה ומדיטציה, ניהלה וכתבה איתם סדר יום וכך עזרה להם לשמור על הגוף והנפש. בעקבות הפרסומים האלה נערכו תרגולי יוגה רבים ברחבי הארץ והעולם, כדי להעלות את המודעות לחטיפתה שנקראו בשם "יוגה לכרמל".
במהלך השבי, הועברה כרמל למנהרה בעומק 20 מטרים מתחת לקרקע, שם הוחזקה בחודשים האחרונים בתנאים קשים ביותר. היא נרצחה על ידי שוביה, יחד עם עוד חמישה ישראלים צעירים, וגופתה נמצאה וחולצה על ידי צה"ל. ב-2.9.2024 כרמל הובאה למנוחות בקיבוץ בארי, מקום הולדתה, לצד אימה כנרת שנרצחה ב-7.10.23.

Occupational therapists in Israel and around the world are mourning the loss of Carmel Gat, who was tragically murdered after being kidnapped and held hostage by the Hamas terror organization in Gaza. Carmel was a distinguished occupational therapist specializing in mental health. She studied Occupational Therapy at Tel Aviv University and was pursuing a master’s degree at the School of Occupational Therapy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem at the time of her kidnapping.
On October 7th, 2023, during a Hamas terror attack, Carmel was abducted from her parents' home in the community of Be'eri, where she had returned to celebrate the holiday with her family. Initially, she was held captive with two children. The children, after being released, recounted how Carmel helped them endure the ordeal by practicing yoga and meditation with them daily. She also organized a schedule for them, helping to preserve their physical and mental well-being during the horrifying experience.
In her honor, yoga sessions under the banner "Yoga for Carmel" were held in Hostages Square in Tel- Aviv, throughout Israel, and around the world to raise awareness of her kidnapping. Carmel was murdered by her captors shortly before her body was discovered yesterday, alongside the bodies of five other young Israeli hostages.
Our hearts are broken, we share in the deep sorrow of her family and pray for the swift return of all kidnapped hostages.
